Symptoms of skin cancer as John Cena opens up on diagnosis and urges people to be aware of the signs

John Cena is urging people to be aware of skin cancer symptoms after having two “cancerous spots” removed. The 47-year-old wrestler admitted he “never” used sunscreen, despite growing up in Massachusetts and later living in Florida.

“I had a cancerous spot removed from my right pec,” Cena told People. “A year later I went back and had another spot removed close to my right shoulder.” He hopes sharing his experience will encourage others to protect their skin.

Skin cancer mainly results from UV exposure. The three main types are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Mayo Clinic warns it often develops on sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, hands, and legs but can also appear in unexpected places.

Early detection is crucial. Signs include “a pearly or waxy bump,” “a flat, flesh-colored or brown scar-like lesion,” or “a bleeding or scabbing sore that heals and returns.” Melanoma may appear as an irregularly shaped mole with multiple colors or a dark lesion that changes over time.

Experts urge people to check their skin regularly and seek medical advice for any suspicious changes. “Early detection gives you the greatest chance for successful skin cancer treatment,” says Mayo Clinic.
