At around 2 a.m. local time, tragedy struck the Jet Set Club in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, when its roof suddenly collapsed. The disaster left at least 100 people dead and many others injured.
Footage from the scene shows a packed dance floor just moments before the ceiling came crashing down. In one video, a man films a live band as the roof caves in. “People at the club were seen fleeing the dance floor with anxious expressions on their faces,” highlighting the panic as the structure began to fail. Local media confirmed the death of the band’s saxophonist.
Rescue efforts have been massive. “Survivors are communicating from within the debris,” and emergency teams, including 30 rescuers, 8 fire trucks, 77 ambulances, and hundreds of police and soldiers, responded quickly.
President Luis Abinader expressed his condolences: “We deeply regret the tragedy… All relief agencies have provided the necessary assistance and are working tirelessly in the rescue efforts.”
Eight hospitals are on red alert, including Cuban, Royal, Modern, and UCE medical centers. Search efforts are ongoing as the nation reels from this shocking incident.
