Why is it so important not to flush the toilet after every trip to the toilet to urinate?

Each flush uses 3 to 9 liters of clean, treated water, “perfectly clean, treated, priceless water – used only to flush away a few centilitres of urine.” Multiply that by the average daily toilet trips of a family, and you’re looking at over 36,000 liters wasted per year. Meanwhile, many around the world still lack access to safe drinking water.

A simple habit is gaining traction in eco-conscious homes:
“If it’s yellow, we wait; if it’s brown, we make it go away.”
Since urine is sterile, skipping the flush occasionally poses no health risk — just make sure the toilet is cleaned regularly.

This doesn’t mean living in filth. “The crucial thing is to keep regular hygiene” by flushing once every couple of days and cleaning the bowl. A few drops of essential oil can help neutralize odors naturally.

You don’t need fancy tech. Just flush when necessary, or install a dual-flush system that uses less water.

Lastly, be courteous. Not everyone embraces this habit. “Be mindful of your hosts’ habits” in shared or public spaces.

Rethink your routine. Small actions can lead to big savings.
