Another revived prophecy came from Saint Malachy, a 12th-century bishop. His “Prophecy of the Popes” describes the final pope as one who would lead during global turmoil before the world ends. Pope Leo is the 113th in the list, the final spot for some interpreters.
Despite the renewed interest, experts warn against reading these as predictions. Historians argue the writings are symbolic. As one scholar noted, “Such texts often reflect the fears of their time rather than forecast the future.”
