Ten days after Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday (21 April), 69-year-old Pope Leo XIV was named the new Bishop of Rome. He has already held his first mass, speaking in English, and is set to lead his inaugural mass this Sunday (18 May) at the Vatican.
His official papal portrait was released, drawing quick attention online. The image shows Pope Leo in white robes, wearing a large gold cross and smiling softly. In the corner is his Coat of Arms and a Latin phrase: “In illo uno unum,” meaning “In the One, we are one.”
Next to it is his handwritten sign-off: “Leo P.P.XIV.” This sparked curiosity. One Reddit user asked, “What does the ‘P.P.’ in the middle mean?” Others responded that it likely stands for “Pastor Pastorum”—Latin for “Shepherd of Shepherds.”
