Even in public breastfeeding remains a heated topic. Covering up in the summer can be difficult, as Texas mom Melanie Dudley experienced firsthand in 2018. While dining at a restaurant, she began nursing her 3-month-old baby. Though her family had no issue, a stranger approached her, saying, “Cover yourself.”
“I was on vacation in Cabo San Lucas with my entire family,” Melanie recalled. She had initially used a cover but found it unbearable in the 95-degree heat. “My little baby was sweating,” she told TODAY.
Instead of arguing, she responded playfully—by placing the cover over her own head. “I don’t know why. That was just my response,” she said. The entire restaurant erupted in laughter.
A woman named Carol Lockwood captured the moment and shared it online, writing, “I think she’s AWESOME!!!” The post went viral, amassing 225,000 shares.
Breastfeeding is natural, and no mother should feel ashamed for feeding her baby in public.
