A doctor has explained why some people need to use the toilet immediately after eating.
Dr. Salhab clarifies that this is due to the **gastrocolic reflex**, a normal bodily response. “When you eat and you feel like you have to use the restroom right after, this is something called the gastrocolic reflex.” VeryWell Health explains, “It isn’t a disease or medical condition but rather a normal reflex that helps your body make room for more food.”
He further breaks it down: “Your stomach stretches and then sends signals to your brain, which then sends signals to your colon.” This doesn’t mean the food you just ate is moving through instantly. Instead, your colon contracts to clear out old waste, making you feel the need to go.
For those with **irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)**, this reflex can be more intense. Cleveland Clinic states IBS can cause “constipation, diarrhea, gas, and bloating.” Dr. Salhab adds, “Some people experience severe cramping and diarrhea due to strong colon contractions.”
To ease symptoms, he advises avoiding **carbonated drinks, alcohol, citrus, dairy, and fatty foods**.
