Canadian singer changes National Anthem lyrics to protest Trump

In a bold act of protest, Canadian singer Chantal Kreviazuk altered a key lyric in *O Canada* during the 4 Nations Face-Off final, responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion of making Canada the 51st state.

Tensions were already high before the U.S.-Canada showdown in Boston. Canadian fans had booed the American anthem in Montreal, and in retaliation, U.S. fans returned the favor. Trump even called Team USA before the game to motivate them.

But the biggest moment came during *O Canada*. Instead of singing “in all of us command,” Kreviazuk changed the lyrics to “that only us command.” Her publicist later confirmed it was a deliberate protest.

Explaining her choice, she told CTV News, *“A sovereign nation should not have to be defending itself against tyranny and fascism.”* She also wrote the altered lyric on her hand as a reminder.

After Canada’s overtime victory, *O Canada* played again—this time, without boos. Kreviazuk’s protest sparked debate, with some praising her courage and others questioning the timing. What do you think—was this the right way to make a statement?
