Donald Trump calls out governor to her face during press conference following controversial law change

During a White House meeting, Donald Trump threatened Maine Governor Janet Mills over her state’s policy allowing transgender women in women’s sports. He demanded compliance with his executive order banning it, warning, “You better do it, because you’re not going to get federal funding.”

Mills refused, stating, “I’m complying with state and federal laws.” Trump responded, “Good. I’ll see you in court… Enjoy your life after, governor, because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics.”

Mills remained defiant, saying Maine “will not be intimidated” and would take legal action to protect federal funding. Attorney General Aaron Frey called Trump’s threats illegal, adding, “I will do everything in my power to defend Maine’s laws.”

Education officials are investigating Maine for possible Title IX violations, arguing that receiving federal funds requires compliance with federal law. However, the Maine Principal’s Association pledged to follow the state’s Human Rights Act, allowing transgender athletes to compete.

Mills reaffirmed her stance: “This is not just about sports. This is about whether a President can force compliance with his will, without regard for the rule of law. I believe he cannot.”
