Hollywood legend Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found dead at their Santa Fe home on February 26. Authorities stated there was no sign of foul play.
Their daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, told TMZ she suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, though the cause of death is not confirmed. Sheriff Adan Mendoza said, “We’re in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant.”
Emergency services were alerted after a neighbor raised concerns. The gas company is assisting in the investigation.
Hackman, known for roles in Superman, Unforgiven, and The French Connection, retired in 2004, saying, “I’m not going to act any longer… I really don’t want to do it any longer.”
The couple were last seen in public in March 2024 at Pappadeaux’s Seafood Kitchen in Santa Fe. The investigation into their deaths continues.
