Amid the devastation of Hurricane Otis in Acapulco, police officer Arisbeth Dionisio Ambrosio performed an extraordinary act of kindness. While clearing debris, she heard a baby crying. A frantic woman explained that the four-month-old had been starving for two days due to a lack of baby food.
Dionisio, a mother herself, acted immediately. “Luckily, Arisbeth was breastfeeding her own baby at that time,” and when she learned of the child’s hunger, she “didn’t hesitate even for a second” to offer her help. The baby, once fed, calmed down instantly.
Part of the elite search-and-rescue “Zorros” unit, Dionisio was among the hundreds aiding those who lost everything to the Category 5 storm. Amid the destruction, her selfless act became “an oasis of hope for everyone.”
Recognized for her compassion, Dionisio was promoted from “Exemplary Police” to “Sub-officer.” Security Minister Pablo Vázquez Camacho praised her, saying, “Her work is an example of humanity for everyone.”
Despite the honor, Dionisio remained humble. “I did very little; we can do so much more,” she said. “If I could, I would go back… just to see the child again.”
