Donald Trump’s new executive order may make voting harder for some Americans. Signed on March 25, it requires proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections and mandates that ballots be received by election day. States that don’t comply risk losing federal funding.
The order directs federal agencies to share voter lists and prosecute election crimes. Voters must provide identification, such as a “driver’s license, birth certificate, [or] passport,” and officials must verify the information.
Critics argue it could create hurdles, especially for married women who changed their names. Since “maiden names will be listed on their birth certificates,” verifying their identity may become more difficult.
