On April 8, the roof of Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, collapsed about an hour into a concert by singer Rubby Pérez. Videos show parts of the roof falling before the entire structure gave way. “We’re going to search tirelessly for people,” said Emergency Operations director Juan Manuel Méndez.
At least 124 people have died, and more than 255 are injured. Victims include MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, Dominican player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera, and Nelsy Cruz, sister of baseball star Nelson Cruz. Rubby Pérez and saxophonist Luis Solis also died. Grupo Popular confirmed the deaths of three employees, and others lost include a cardiologist, an army captain, and relatives of government officials. Only 54 victims have been identified so far.
President Luis Abinader declared three days of mourning, saying: “Our prayers are with the affected families.” U.S. Senator Marco Rubio noted the death of U.S. citizens, offering support.
Families await news. “It was their favorite place,” said Kimberly Jones, whose niece and godson are missing. Pedro Martinez shared his grief online: “We’re all affected by the tragedy.”Jet Set released a statement: “There are no words to express the pain this event has caused… you can count on us.”
