Donald Trump warned his followers on social media just hours before his administration reversed a major tariff policy that had shaken the stock market. “THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!” he posted—four hours before the U-turn was announced.
Last week, Trump announced sweeping tariffs, but on April 9, his administration pulled back on most, except for China. Treasury officials said most countries would now face a 10% baseline tariff, delaying harsher “reciprocal” tariffs for 90 days. China, however, was hit with a 125% tariff after it imposed an 84% tariff on U.S. goods.
The market rebounded following the reversal, making Trump’s timing profitable for anyone who acted on his advice. Officials claimed “this was his strategy all along” to pause tariffs and spark recovery.
Critics, including Democratic Rep. Steven Horsford, questioned the secrecy. “Did you know this was happening? Is this market manipulation?” he asked, calling it “amateur hour.”
Trump adviser Jamieson Greer denied any wrongdoing, saying the goal was to “reset the global trade system.” Ethics expert Kathleen Clark noted that under other presidents, Trump’s post might’ve triggered an investigation. “He’s sending the message that he can… manipulate the market,” she said.
