Man who protected royal family through darkest hour dies at 77

Prince Harry and Prince William once shared a strong bond, shaped by growing up in the public eye and the devastating loss of their mother, Princess Diana. A key witness to their childhood was their longtime bodyguard, Graham Craker—affectionately known as “Crackers”—who served the royal family for 15 years.

Craker passed away at 77. He stood by the princes during some of their hardest moments, including Diana’s death. On the day she died, he accompanied Harry and William to Balmoral, later walking behind the hearse at her funeral. “William looked up and acknowledged me. I nodded. William was comforted that I was with his mum on her final journey,” Craker recalled.

He described the profound national mourning: “Even the southbound traffic had stopped and people got out of their cars and bowed in respect.”
Prince Harry also paid tribute in his memoir *Spare*, writing, “The driver had to keep pulling over so the bodyguard could get out and clear the flowers off the windscreen… Willy and I liked him a lot. We always called him Crackers.”

Even after retirement, Craker remained close to the family, attending William’s wedding and receiving the Royal Victorian Order from Queen Elizabeth II. His sons described him as “an incredible man” who “lived his life so selflessly.”
