What began as a routine flight turned tragic when a Jetstream 32 aircraft crashed into the sea near Roatán, Honduras, on March 17, 2025. Operated by Lanhsa, the plane went down shortly after takeoff, killing 12 of the 17 onboard. “The aircraft lost engine power,” authorities said, pointing to a possible mechanical failure.
The victims included beloved Garifuna singer Aurelio Martínez Suazo. “His body was recovered still wearing the outfit from filming earlier that day.” Others who died included co-pilot Francisco Lagos and a family of four: Carlos Edwin Mejía, Alba Rosa Acosta Torres, and daughters Rosmery and Karla. Only five survived, thanks to local fishermen who responded within minutes. “We heard cries and pulled them to safety,” said fisherman Aldair Alemán.
Tributes poured in for Suazo, with British artist Peter Gabriel calling him “a cultural beacon,” while singer Kezia Young remembered his unwavering support.
The wreckage, submerged 50 meters deep, complicated recovery. Survivors were treated in Roatán, then moved to better hospitals.
This crash adds to 2025’s growing aviation tragedies, including crashes in Pennsylvania and Philadelphia. In both, mechanical issues were suspected. The FAA and NTSB vow deeper investigations to prevent future disasters.
