A tragic car crash near the Wyoming-Colorado border claimed the lives of three University of Wyoming swimming and diving team members: Luke Slabber, 21, from South Africa; Charlie Clark, 19, from Las Vegas; and Carson Muir, 18, from Alabama.
The crash occurred near Red Mountain Road and U.S. Highway 287. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the Toyota RAV4 they were in veered off the road and rolled several times, ejecting two passengers. “Initial findings indicate that the driver’s swerving caused the vehicle to veer off the road.” Two other team members were injured but later released from the hospital.
The accident happened around 2:45 p.m., and while all five were on the swimming team, they were not traveling for official school business.
University President Ed Seidel said, “The distress felt by the university, the state, and the greater student-athlete community is immense.” Athletic Director Tom Burman added that counseling services are available to those impacted by the loss.
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon and his wife also extended their condolences, asking people to “keep the victims’ loved ones… close to their hearts.”
This heartbreaking incident is a sobering reminder of life’s fragility and the unpredictable nature of tragedy.
