**Weed and Workouts: Hype or Helpful?**
Fitness lovers are always hunting for new ways to enhance performance and enjoyment. Recently, some have turned to cannabis. While research is still mixed, many users say it boosts mood, focus, and motivation. “Using weed before a workout is a great way to get out of your head about what’s to come,” says yoga instructor Jessamyn Stanley.
Cannabis may enhance workouts by increasing dopamine, reducing anxiety, and easing pain. Dr. Gary Starr adds that weed might also help with post-exercise inflammation. Some even find repetitive tasks like long runs more enjoyable when high.
Still, the science isn’t settled. A 2017 study found no performance improvement, but surveys show people using cannabis tend to work out longer. As one Nature journal survey notes, around 70% said weed made exercising more enjoyable.
There are risks: increased heart rate, dehydration, and impaired coordination. “Hydration is key,” warns Meryl Montgomery. Proper dosage is also crucial—start low and slow.
For a THC-free option, CBD may offer pain relief and focus without the high. As Kendra Freeman of Mendi puts it, “CBD won’t make you all floaty… so you might find yourself able to focus on your workout more.”
Cannabis and exercise may mix—but tread carefully.
