In 2016, a tragic accident at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City claimed the life of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab. While riding the Verrückt water slide—then the world’s tallest at 168 feet—Caleb was ejected and struck a metal pole, resulting in his decapitation. His brother, Nathan, watching from below, screamed, “He flew from the Verrückt!”
The Schwab family reached a settlement with the park’s previous owners and pursued further legal action against the company that built the slide. Schlitterbahn said it was “heartbroken” and insisted guest safety had always been a priority.
The park closed in 2018 following the tragedy. The event remains a haunting reminder of the risks involved when safety measures fail.
The Schwab family’s grief is unimaginable. Rest in peace, Caleb.
