Cardinal Robert Prevost, born in Chicago, has become the first American pope, taking the name Leo XIV.
Despite his U.S. origins, Pope Leo has been critical of Donald Trump’s immigration policies. In a 2018 post, he wrote: “There is nothing remotely Christian, American, or morally defensible about a policy that takes children away from their parents and warehouses them in cages.”
The new pope, who spent much of his life in Peru and holds dual citizenship, has long voiced support for undocumented immigrants and DACA recipients. One retweet read: “Do you not see the suffering? Is your conscience not disturbed?”
