A tragic accident occurred on May 17 when a Mexican Navy training ship, Cuauhtémoc, crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. The 297-foot vessel, carrying 277 people, struck the bridge after reportedly losing power.
Authorities confirmed that “the Mexican Navy tall ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge,” said NYC Mayor Eric Adams. Two people died, and 19 were injured—two critically. “We are praying for everyone on board,” he added.
Footage showed the ship’s masts clipping the bridge. Crew members standing on the masts fell when they snapped. Witness Lily Katz said she saw someone “dangling from the harness… for like at least 15 minutes before they were able to rescue them.”
