Former President Trump has ordered the reopening and expansion of Alcatraz prison, calling it a solution for housing the “most ruthless and violent offenders.
The move involves cooperation between the Bureau of Prisons, FBI, Homeland Security, and the DOJ.
This decision follows legal battles over Trump’s past efforts to send gang members and illegal migrants to harsh prisons abroad. Alcatraz, closed in 1963, may now be used to bypass court rulings that limit mass deportations.
“We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and judges that are afraid to do their job,” Trump tweeted, suggesting that illegal migrants would be targeted first. He also announced plans to build a new facility in Guantanamo Bay for up to 30,000 “worst criminal aliens.”
Some courts have ruled deportees must receive due process, but Trump’s proposal hints that even U.S. citizens could face detention in places like Alcatraz or foreign prisons. As Trump put it, “The dregs of society… will only ever contribute misery and suffering.”
