Playing the role of Grizzly Adams was Dan Haggerty.

The Life and Legacy of Grizzly Adams

Dan Haggerty, best known for playing Grizzly Adams—a peaceful mountain man with “a luxurious beard and a bear named Ben”—died Friday in Burbank, California.

His friend and manager, Terry Bomar, said the cause was “cancer of the spine.”

Haggerty was a Hollywood stuntman and animal handler when asked to help reshoot scenes for a film about “a woodsman and his bear.”

He agreed, “but only on the condition that he took on the entire film.”

Made for $165,000, it earned nearly $30 million and inspired a hit NBC series in 1977.
