**6.2-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Istanbul — Live Footage Shows Terrified Presenter And Panicked Citizens**
A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Istanbul and nearby areas, shaking buildings and sending panicked citizens fleeing into the streets. “One of the largest earthquakes to hit the 16 million-person city in recent memory,” the quake’s epicenter was near Silivri, a seismically active coastal area.
Live footage captured a CNN Turkey reporter clinging to her desk mid-broadcast as the quake struck. “The first tremor lasted 30 seconds before up to 51 aftershocks occurred,” with one reaching magnitude 5.3. People as far as Greece and Bulgaria reported feeling it.
Though no major structural collapses were reported, over 150 people were injured—mostly from jumping out of buildings in panic. “Everyone started looking at one another,” said tourist Sandra D’Souza, who was near Galata Tower during the quake. “There were far more people out in the street afterward.”
Authorities urged residents to avoid damaged buildings. “Until now, we have no information about any buildings collapsing,” the governor’s office said.
The tremor revived fears of a major quake predicted by 2030. “Experts warn Istanbul could face a magnitude 7+ quake with a 65% chance,” possibly affecting millions and destroying up to 600,000 homes.
