According to the American Cancer Society, “the average adult in the United States has about a forty percent chance of developing cancer during their lifetime.” While no food guarantees full protection, many can help reduce your risk. Dietitian Lindsey Wohlford notes, “You can’t say with absolute certainty that food can prevent cancer,” but healthy choices over time matter.
Foods that may help include:
**1. Cruciferous Vegetables**
Broccoli, cabbage, and kale contain glucosinolates and other compounds that may reduce risks of prostate, lung, colorectal, and breast cancers.
**2. Turmeric & Mushrooms**
Turmeric’s curcumin may lower inflammation, possibly preventing cancer. Mushrooms like reishi and shiitake support immune function. “Turkey Tail… contains polysaccharide K, a known cancer adjunct therapy.”
**3. Allium & Seaweed**
Garlic and onions may lower gut cancer risk by 79%. Wakame, a seaweed, has shown anti-cancer effects in lab studies and provides essential iodine.
**4. Colorful Produce**
Tomatoes, carrots, and sweet potatoes provide lycopene and beta-carotene. “Eat the rainbow,” says Wohlford, to access different phytochemicals—over 4,000 exist.
**5. Fatty Fish & More**
Salmon and tuna are rich in Omega-3s and vitamin D. Other helpful foods include berries, legumes, and green tea.
Limiting processed meats, fried foods, sugar, and alcohol, along with staying active, can “create an internal environment that promotes health and vitality.”
