Pope Francis’ ‘Eyes Were Open’ in His Final Moments — Doctor Recalls the Pontiff’s Heartbreaking Last Hours

**Pope Francis’ Final Hours: A Quiet Goodbye**

From lying unresponsive to slipping into a coma and receiving a final caress from his trusted surgeon, Pope Francis’ last moments unfolded quietly and solemnly.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, who operated on the Pope in 2021, shared, *“His eyes were open, he didn’t answer me. There was nothing to be done.”* On Easter Eve, the Pontiff was upbeat and enjoying a favorite tart. *“I’m very well. I started working again, and I’m up for it,”* he told Alfieri.

Despite his health, Pope Francis insisted on fulfilling duties, even walking through crowds. Ten days before his death, he requested a gathering with his medical team. Alfieri now believes the Pope *“felt he had important tasks to complete before his passing.”*

On Easter Sunday, he gave his final public blessing. That night, he quietly dined, went to bed, and by morning had slipped into a coma. Before losing consciousness, he whispered, *“Thank you for bringing me back to the Square.”*

At his side were Alfieri, nurses, and Massimiliano Strappetti, his longtime caregiver. The Pope waved to Strappetti — a final gesture. His death was sudden but peaceful. The cause: stroke, coma, and heart failure. He died as he lived — humbly, faithfully, and close to the people.
