An 11-year-old girl from Gainesville, Texas, Jocelynn Rojo Carranza, died by suicide on February 8 after enduring severe bullying about her family’s immigration status.

Her mother, Marbella Carranza, said Jocelynn was told by classmates that immigration would “take her parents away.” Though Jocelynn sought school counseling, her family says they were never informed. The Gainesville Independent School District responded, saying they “take all reports of bullying seriously,” but could not share specifics due to privacy laws. Jocelynn’s mother accuses the school of negligence and is demanding justice.

Jocelynn was described as a joyful girl who loved dancing, movie nights, and spending time with her family. Her funeral took place on February 14, filled with music and memories. Her death has deeply affected the community and led to calls for stronger bullying prevention and improved communication between schools and families.
This tragedy underscores how bullying—especially when linked to immigration fears—can have devastating consequences.
