Tsunami Warning As 7.6-magnitude Earthquake Strikes In Major Travel Destination

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck north of Honduras on Saturday, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences. The US Geological Survey reported it hit at 6:23 p.m. EST.

The US Tsunami Warning System issued advisories for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, warning of possible dangerous sea level changes and strong currents. However, San Juan’s National Weather Service later canceled the tsunami advisory at 8:13 p.m.

Initially, GFZ estimated the quake’s magnitude at 6.89 but later confirmed it was 7.6, occurring at a depth of 6.21 miles. The earthquake led to multiple warnings, including one for the Caribbean Sea and areas near Honduras.

Authorities still urge people in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to stay out of the water, away from beaches, harbors, and inlets due to lingering ocean risks.

The situation is still developing.
