Donald Trump has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” through an executive order. In his speech, he stated, “America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth.” The name change aligns with his “Make America Great Again” vision.
Following the decision, Google Maps updated its U.S. version to display “Gulf of America,” while other countries see both names. A Google spokesperson explained, “We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.” Apple Maps, however, still shows “Gulf of Mexico.”
Despite opposition from Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, the Trump administration enforced the change, calling the Gulf “an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation.”
Social media users noticed inconsistencies. A Reddit user in Georgia reported, “My Google Maps app says Gulf of America,” but when zooming out, it reverted. Others in Brazil and Germany still see “Gulf of Mexico.”
The change has sparked debate, with some Americans unaware that location affects how the name appears on digital maps.
