High school wrestler forfeits tournament after seeing opponent

Wrestler Forfeits State Match for His Beliefs

In 2018, Colorado high school wrestler Brendan Johnston made headlines when he forfeited two state tournament matches against female opponents.

When he saw his opponent, he simply said “congratulations” and walked away, effectively ending his wrestling career.

Johnston cited his religious and personal beliefs, explaining that competing against girls conflicted with his values. “It’s not how I was raised,” he stated.

While some criticized his decision, others praised his integrity and respect for standing by his convictions, even at the cost of a championship opportunity.
