Lisa, a woman with Down syndrome, surprised her mother, Patti White, over 20 years ago with news of her pregnancy. Despite common beliefs that “men with Down syndrome were sterile,” Patti recalled, her daughter was expecting a child with her partner, who also had Down syndrome.
Lisa, then 29, was living independently, working full-time at Goodwill, and had been in a relationship. While her pregnancy was considered high-risk, Lisa embraced motherhood with determination, saying, “I worked five days a week while pregnant… I wasn’t feeling well and had morning sickness.”
Her son, Nic, was born four weeks early, also with Down syndrome. Tragically, Nic’s father passed away when he was five. Lisa faced criticism from outsiders questioning her ability to parent, but her family’s support proved vital.
Despite the challenges, Nic thrived. Now 24, he graduated from college and admires his mother deeply: “She gave me life, she gave me love, and she gave me birth.”
Patti, proud of their journey, reflected, “We can honestly state that they have surmounted the challenges… and have a great deal of love for one another.” Their story showcases the strength and value of individuals with Down syndrome, deserving respect and admiration.
