A family of five from Barcelona, Spain, tragically died in a helicopter crash in New York on Thursday, April 10. The victims were Siemens executive Agustín Escobar, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, and their children aged 11, five, and four. Pilot Sean Johnson, a former Navy SEAL, also died when the chopper “split in two” and plunged into the Hudson River.
Before the crash, Johnson had radioed that he needed fuel. “He called in that he was landing and that he needed fuel,” said helicopter owner Michael Roth. “It should have taken him about three minutes to arrive, but 20 minutes later, he didn’t.”
Eyewitness Max told ABC News, “It sounded like a sonic boom… I saw the helicopter splitting in two, with the rotor flying off in the sky… it just went straight into the water.”
Joan Camprubí Montal, Merce’s brother, traveled to New York to identify the bodies. At a press conference, he emotionally shared, “We will never forget you. We will keep your smile alive every day of our lives, and I believe that’s the best legacy we can give you.”
