The US president has been dubbed a “disgrace” after apparently “disrespecting” protocol at Pope Francis’ funeral. The late pontiff, who passed away at 88, was laid to rest after a requiem mass at St Peter’s Basilica, with over 200,000 mourners attending, including Donald Trump, Melania Trump, and world leaders.
Trump sparked backlash by wearing a bright blue suit, standing out among the “sea of black-cladded attendees.” His attire broke the Catholic funeral tradition of wearing black. Making matters worse, Trump and Melania were spotted stepping onto the sacred carpet around the Pope’s coffin, reserved as “holy ground.”
During the service, Trump was caught scrolling on his phone, chewing gum, and even “nodding off,” all while sitting in the front row. “Viewers say it looked like the POTUS fell asleep at some points,” one outlet noted.
Adding to the criticism, Trump quickly left after the service. One viewer summed it up: “Trump fell asleep at the Pope’s funeral, walked on the rug, refused to wear a dark suit, said he was looking forward to a fun trip, and left early. Sheesh.”
