This is the second major quake in just over a week, following a similar 6.1 event near Kasos. Thousands of smaller quakes have struck the region this year, especially in the Cyclades. Experts note Greece’s seismic activity is due to its location between tectonic plates.
Despite the fear, Heraklion’s mayor said schools would remain open and no serious problems were reported.
