Earlier this week, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe home. The actor’s death at 95 shocked fans worldwide, with tributes pouring in.
Santa Fe County confirmed, “We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased Wednesday afternoon at their residence on Sunset Trail.” Authorities don’t suspect foul play but stated the investigation is ongoing.
Hackman, known for The French Connection, had largely stayed out of the public eye. However, nearly 21 years after his last appearance, he was spotted with his wife in 2024. The couple was seen leaving Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Albuquerque, with Hackman holding a cane and Arakawa’s arm.
The two met in Los Angeles in 1984, where Arakawa worked part-time at a fitness center. They married in 1991 and shared a quiet life away from the spotlight.
Adding to the tragedy, the couple’s dog died on February 26, 2025, in their New Mexico home.
