Understanding Scabies: Symptoms, Risks, and What to Look Out For

Scabies is a “common but misunderstood skin condition” caused by mites that burrow into the skin, triggering intense allergic reactions. It spreads through close contact or shared items like bedding and clothing, making it “highly contagious.”

Symptoms include “severe nighttime itching,” red rashes, blisters, and sometimes visible burrows. Severe cases, such as crusted (Norwegian) scabies, “can affect those with weakened immune systems.”Treatment usually involves topical creams like permethrin or oral medications like ivermectin. It’s important to “treat all close contacts and disinfect clothing and bedding” to prevent reinfection.

Although scabies “isn’t usually dangerous,” untreated cases may cause secondary infections. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are crucial for full recovery.
If you experience persistent itching and rash, “seek medical attention.” Good hygiene, timely treatment, and awareness help control outbreaks and prevent spreading. A doctor’s video explaining scabies is available at the end.
