Super Bowl fans had mixed reactions when cameras showed Donald Trump during the national anthem. The 78-year-old became the first sitting US president to attend a Super Bowl, watching the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans.
While Grammy-winner Jon Batiste performed, some viewers believed Trump was booed. “Y’all didn’t boo at Donald Trump loud enough,” one person wrote. Another said, “That was pretty s**tty to show Trump during Jon Batiste singing the National Anthem, forced me and half of America to boo.” Others were unsure, with one asking, “Did they cheer or boo Trump? Difficult to tell.”
Ahead of the game, Trump highlighted football’s role in American culture, saying, “Football is America’s most popular sport – for good reason – it fosters a sense of national unity.”
He also praised the teams’ dedication: “Their hard work, dedication, and tenacity is admirable, and their individual journeys are as inspiring as the drive and determination that has led them to this extraordinary moment.”
Trump expressed excitement about attending, stating, “I look forward to joining the fans in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX to cheer on two great teams.”
