Petition for Denmark to purchase California reaches 240,000 signatures after Trump said he wanted to take over Greenland

Denmark is seemingly playing Donald Trump at his own game.

After Trump called buying Greenland an “absolute necessity” for “National Security and Freedom throughout the World,” a satirical petition emerged, urging Denmark to buy California. The petition’s bio jokes: “Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.'”

Started by civil tech activist Xåvier Dutoit, the petition mocks Trump’s Greenland idea, highlighting its “neocolonialism obscenity.” Dutoit said he was inspired after hearing a “MAGA-adjacent American” defend the Greenland proposal.

The petition aims to raise $1 trillion, or “just 200,000 kroner from every Dane,” to rename California as “New Denmark,” with Los Angeles becoming “Løs Ångeles.”

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, responded to Trump’s idea, stating the territory “is not for sale and will not be in the future.”

While Trump insists “Greenland is an incredible place” and would “benefit tremendously” as part of the US, Denmark’s viral joke highlights the absurdity of his proposal.
