Another terrible loss for the Bryant family, sending prayers

Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, former NBA player and father of Kobe Bryant, has died at 69, according to La Salle University. Though the cause of death hasn’t been officially confirmed, *The Philadelphia Inquirer* reported he recently suffered a stroke.

Joe had a respected basketball career, playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, San Diego Clippers, and Houston Rockets, as well as in Europe. He was drafted 14th overall by the Golden State Warriors in 1975. The 76ers called him “a local basketball icon,” honoring his legacy in Philly basketball.

His death comes four years after the tragic helicopter crash that killed Kobe and granddaughter Gianna. Vanessa Bryant shared, “We hoped things would’ve been different… Kobe loved him very much.”

Joe also influenced many as a coach. Doug Young, a former player, said, “He made basketball fun… I’ll never forget his infectious smile… and the incredible bond he shared with Kobe.”

Arn Tellem, Kobe’s former agent, said, “Joe was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, whose warmth touched everyone he met.”

La Salle University remembered him as “a beloved member of the Explorer family.”
