Donald Trump recently hosted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House, and the meeting was marked by tension. Trump, pushing his global tariff strategy, told Carney that Canada could avoid U.S. tariffs by becoming the 51st state. Carney firmly rejected the idea, stating, *“It’s not for sale. Won’t be for sale, ever.”*
Despite the imposition of 25% tariffs, Canada has maintained its independence. Carney emphasized national pride, saying Canadians are *“masters in our own home”* and *“can give ourselves far more than any foreign government can ever take away.”*
In the Oval Office, Trump claimed the U.S. doesn’t do much business with Canada. Carney quickly corrected him: *“We are the largest client of the United States… 50 percent of a car that comes from Canada is American.”*
Trump replied with *“Never say never,”* citing past unlikely successes, but Carney stood firm. Former PM Justin Trudeau had previously dismissed the idea as well, saying it was never *“going to happen.”*
Body language expert Beth Dawson described Carney as *“assertive”* but also *“apprehensive”*, noting that his demeanor showed determination without being confrontational.
