Police later tracked Megan’s phone to a resale kiosk. It had been sold by 50-year-old Elliot Michael Beafore, who said he got it from another unhoused person. He was arrested for theft but cleared of any involvement in Megan’s death.
Though the investigation used digital records, surveillance footage, and interviews, Megan’s parents strongly reject the suicide ruling. Her mother, Vanessa Diaz, said officials showed a “callous attitude and obvious bias.” Her father, Joe Trussell, said, “I will accept any conclusion supported by facts, but this one raises serious doubts.”
The family believes key evidence was ignored. A GoFundMe campaign called Seeking Truth and Transparency has raised over $70,000 to fund a private investigation. Organizer Rebecca Perez wrote, “The findings feel premature and don’t align with crucial details uncovered by loved ones.”
Joe remains hopeful: “We still hold hope that the agency will do the right thing.”
